Through the arts, students develop a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, as well as physical fitness.  According to a 2006 study by the Guggenheim Museum, a foundation in the arts can also help to improve literacy skills.  Art programs can help to improve memory and concentration skills, develop decision-making and critical thinking skills, enhance communication and listening skills.  Research from the National Endowment for the Arts states that at-risk youth involved in the arts are more likely to do better academically and engage in a positive way with their community.
